Archerfield 50 Lapper
Kiwi visitors Hayden Williams and Leon Burgess pulled off a historic 1 - 2 finish at the season finale 50 lap Midget Classic at Brisbanes Archerfield Speedway last saturday nite.
Both drivers turn out for the Geoff and Suzanne Harper owned HLR Racing in Auckland but were both in hired cars for the Qld event.
Top qualifier Adam Clarke elected to invert the top 12 grid, which placed Williams a long way back on 18. The track slicked off early as Archerfield tends to do and turned into a tyre graveyard lower down with the smell of tyre smoke wafting amongst the methanol fumes. Early dominant Clarke fell back at the mid point with both rears balded and Williams took over with Burgess in hot pursuit, both running a carefully planned race and avoiding the low, which had picked up a lot of rubber.
And that's how they finished. A well earned first 50 lapper podium for Williams and the HLR team who have worked long and hard to shake off the pretender mantle and become accepted as the top tier competitors they now surely are.
